Fall Student Volunteer

Company Name:
Department Of The Treasury
U.S. Citizen; No Prior Federal Experience Required 16 Weeks - September 2, 2014 - December 19, 2014 Fall Student Volunteer The Office of Foreign Assets Control is looking for rising undergraduate seniors or graduate students with a background in U.S. History, who will be given the opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of the workings of OFAC and economic sanctions. Each student will then make use of his/her academic expertise to research the origins of U.S. Treasury sanctions dating back to the early 1800s, how they led to the Office of Foreign Funds Control (the predecessor to OFAC) during WWII, and, ultimately, how they have led to the modern-day OFAC sanctions that have been much in the news of late.
There is a wealth of primary source material available as well as considerable institutional memory at Treasury. This project began during the summer of 2014. The internship will involve researching statutes and regulations as well as archival material.
The information gleaned from the research will be enormously helpful to the Treasury Department for use at outreach events and elsewhere. While the internship will be unpaid, the project should easily lend itself to being a for-credit experience, if that can be worked out with your University.
