Locates and diagnoses trouble, potential safety hazards or required improvements to mechanical and/or structural systems throughout the Smithsonian Institution; and repairs or replaces parts and/or components to assure continued service and performance.
Develops plans and templates and fabricates various parts and components using metal and various materials (sometimes when there is minimal background information available).
Builds, overhauls, manufactures and repairs parts and pieces of equipment that require the use of specialized machine tools including laboratory equipment.
Selects appropriate material based on durability, cost, strength and appearance.
Works (as necessary) to assist other trades/crafts, laborers and utilities personnel in any of the zones to accomplish requirements.
Physical Requirements: This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.

2. Technical practices (theoretical precise, artistic).
3. Ability to use shop drawings.
4. Measurement and layout.
5. Ability to use hand tools for machine shop.
6. Knowledge of metal (appropriate materials for a variety of specialized metal fabrication and repair functions).
Applicants who meet or exceed the screen-out element will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the screen-out element and excels in most of the job related elements above. Better Category - Meets the screen-out element and satisfies most of the job related elements above. Good Category - Meets the screen-out element, but does not satisfy most of the job related elements above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the rule of three, but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-veterans within each category.
