The Communications Director (Director) leads the communications efforts of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (Alliance), a public-private partnership hosted by the United Nations Foundation.
The Director will be responsible for developing the communications strategy, annual planning, execution and oversight of all communications efforts around local, national and international activities that further the Alliance's mission of saving lives, improving livelihoods, empowering women and protecting the environment through the creation of a global market for clean cooking solutions.
The Alliance's goal is for 100 million households to adopt clean cookstoves and fuels by 2020, and an effective press, partner and fundraising communications operation is essential toward achieving that goal.
The Director reports directly to the Executive Director of the Alliance, with a dotted line to the Senior Communications Director, Campaigns and Initiatives, UN Foundation.
The Director will manage a team of two: a Senior Digital Producer that runs and oversees the Alliance's website and social media channels, and a to-be-hired Communications Officer that will assist the Director in fulfilling his/her duties. The Director will also have strong influence over two to three field based communication consultants.
Strategic Planning: Understand and translate the Alliance's mission, strategy, goal, current operating plan, event calendar and unique partnership base into a strong communications strategy and plan with clear, achievable deliverables;
Support to national awareness building campaigns: each of the Alliances focus countries will be implementing awareness campaigns to support the adoption of cleaner and more efficient fuels and cookstoves. The Communications Director will be a critical voice in shaping these efforts and ensuring alignment with our global messaging.
Writing: Produce diverse written products, from major speeches to blog posts, from press releases to newsletter content.
Editing: Provide Alliance team with editing services on important public-facing documents (reports, correspondence with VIPs, grant proposals, etc.);
Media Relations: Build and maintain relationships with U.S. and international journalists, producers and bloggers.
Management: In addition to managing a team of two, and field based consultants the Director will oversee contracts and projects with communications vendors such as designers and photographer/videographers, as well as media consultants.

Bachelor's degree in international affairs, public policy, journalism, or communications, plus 8-10 years of experience in communications or public relations (including substantive internships), is required.
Experience with communications and public relations in international affairs field or setting is preferred.
Excellent writing, editing, interpersonal, and oral communications skills.
A keen sense of what makes and shapes the news, and the ability to make well-informed decisions in targeting appropriate media outlets and reporters.
A strong knowledge of new media including blogs, social networking and emerging online news outlets.
Knowledge of and passion for global health, gender empowerment, and climate issues is essential.
Attention to detail and adherence to deadlines.
Strong skills working in teams and across many types of organizations - collaborator; problem solver; relationship-builder; and strong inter-personal skills.
Able to engage in stress tolerance and resilience; possess a sense of humor; be highly organized; demonstrate grace under pressure; and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
A willingness to travel (up to 25%), and the ability to interact with people from diverse, multi-cultural backgrounds.

Salary commensurate with experience. Actual salary will depend on qualifications and anticipated contribution to the Foundation.
