This position is the Legal Assistance Supervisory Attorney Advisor located at the Region Legal Service Office Naval District Washington in Washington, DC (Washington Navy Yard). The incumbent provides Legal Assistance Services to active duty, reserves, retirees, family members, and other eligible clients. The incumbent assigns work involving Legal Assistance to subordinates, supervises subordinates, and evaluates their performance. The incumbent is responsible for the professional development of all assigned personnel to proficiently perform a wide range of legal and paralegal duties. Establishes and maintains liaisons with the Office of the Judge Advocate General (Legal Assistance Division), legal assistance officers of other Armed Forces Commands, Navy Reserve Judge Advocates, and the state and local bar associations.

Legal Assistance Attorney, the incumbent will have primary responsibility for providing personal legal assistance and representation to eligible personnel, conducting the legal assistance and preventative law activities in the local area, and supervising the expanded legal assistance program within the Region Legal Service Office Southeast area of responsibility.
Services will cover the entire spectrum of legal assistance issues, but will most often involve; wills and estates, landlord-tenant issues, Soldiers' and Sailors' Civil Relief Act, Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, Real Property, Taxes, nonsupport and indebtedness, consumer affairs, adoptions, domestic relations, and immigration.
Supervisor to personnel including, but not limited to, one civilian Legal Assistant.
Mentor and Advisor to less experienced personnel assigned to the department, most uniformed members will be on their first assignment as a legal assistance attorney. Responsible for training legal assistance personnel regarding local laws, rules of civil procedures, as well as local court rules.
Establish an effective preventive law program, developing materials and programs to educate service members and their families about the availability of legal counseling services; publicizes and disseminates information.
Must have a J.D. Degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the bar of any state or the District of Columbia. Minimum of three years post law school legal experience as either a military judge advocate or in private legal practice providing representation concerning family law issues.
Specialized Skills: Extensive knowledge and skill sufficient to provide authoritative advice and assistance on complex legal assistance matters. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner on technical and legal issues and principles with persons of various backgrounds. Primary purpose of position is to provide authoritative information and substantive advice to eligible personnel, and conduct the legal assistance and preventative law activities in the local area. Knowledge of and strong skills using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Power Point, SharePoint and other word processing systems and knowledge of personal computers for storage and retrieval of case files. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Knowledge of full range of management duties and responsibilities in order to supervise several uniformed attorneys and support staff.

Position may require occasional travel.
Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period, must have or be able to obtain a Secret security clearance, and meet all certification requirements (depending on the position to be filled) prior to appointment.
A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to report to any of the scheduled appointments and/or fails any applicable medical/agility/drug test, lacks the certification requirements, or is unable to obtain a security clearance.
