This position is located in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Office of Research. The Office of Research's mission includes researching, analyzing, and reporting on topics relating to the Bureau's mission, including developments in markets for consumer financial products and services, consumer awareness, and consumer behavior. Please refer to Conditions of Employment. Click Print Preview to review the entire announcement before applying. As the Chief of Staff to the Assistant Director, Office of Research, you will:
Participate fully with the Assistant Director and Deputy Assistant Director and other managers in planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating CFPB research functions and other Office functions.
Facilitate the development of, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, and guidelines for integration of research into RMR and Bureau projects drawing on Office expertise; execution and publication of self-directed research; and, meet other responsibilities of the Office that support CFPB's mission, goals, and priorities.
Represent the Assistant Director and Deputy Assistant Director on matters of management and administration of the Office. Develop, with the Assistant Director and other managers, management strategies to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the Office in the most efficient and effective manner. Execute and supervise the implementation of the management strategy, and assist in all aspects of management and administration. Examine day-to-day operations of the Office to identify areas for improvement and propose and execute such improvements.
Serve as a liaison to staffs of other CFPB divisions and offices, other federal and state agencies, and to outside parties. Serve as a point of contact for and represent the Assistant Director and Deputy Assistant Director on matters of a significant nature.
Serve as primary coordinator for activities of the Academic Research Council (ARC). Maintain regular contact with Council members. Coordinate annual meeting of the ARC including interaction with Assistant Director of Research, Deputy Assistant Director of Research, Council members, and the Staff Director, Consumer Advisory Board and Councils.

The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. The experience may have been gained in either the public or private sector. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Specialized Experience at the CN-60: You must have at least one year of specialized experience performing Economist functions equivalent to the CN-53 level (For qualification purposes, the CN-53 is broadly equivalent to the GS-13) that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience is defined as experience providing strategic and operational guidance and expertise over a program responsible for researching, analyzing, and reporting on topics relating to consumer financial products and services, consumer awareness, and consumer behavior.

Basic Education Requirements: Degree: Economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. 1. Examples of qualifying experience include: (a) individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation; (b) supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information; or (c) teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and one of the following (1)personal research that produced evidence of results, (2) direction of graduate theses in economics, or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems. 2. Experience in related fields that did not involve the use and understanding of economic principles and theories may not be used as qualifying experience for these positions. Special attention on this point should be given to certain types of work that may or may not have provided professional economic experience. The following examples of work require special care in such determinations: (a) economic statistics; (b) industrial surveys; (c) management of individual business enterprises, including farms; (d) industrial planning; (e) writing or editorial work in economic subjects; and (f) financial market analysis.
