Job Summary Reporting to the Chief Physicist, performs all basic dosimetry functions including, but not limited to:
preparation of treatment plans and dose calculations under the direct supervision of the physicist while advancing one's own knowledge of dosimetry. Assists radiation therapy staff with difficult simulation procedures and treatment sets-ups. Works with Chief Therapist and other staff to implement new simulation procedures. Minimum Qualifications Education/Training Bachelor's degree in a science oriented field with /or graduate of an approved medical dosimetry school with clinical and classroom curriculum required (study and training is at least 18 months). Must be able to understand the technical standards of radiation oncology and medical physics to derive computerized treatment plans, and communicate these aspects to the radiation oncologist for plan approval, and to the radiation therapist for plan implementation. Has the ability to interpret and execute treatment plans as defined in relevant treatment protocols. Must possess mathematical skills including algebra, trigonometry, and introductory calculus and be able to visualize objects in three dimensional concepts to facilitate the treatment planning process. Experience Recent graduate of an approved medical dosimetry school or who has worked in the field of medical dosimetry 1-2 years. On The Job Experience ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCE Approximately three to six months to gain familiarity with the Hospital environment, department routines and procedures, and the full range of job duties. License/Certification/Registration Preferred certification by the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (CMD) or board eligible based on clinical and didactic schooling. If board eligible, associate must take and pass boards within 2 years of hire date. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities PROBLEM SOLVING:

Internal contacts necessary to effectively advise, consult or counsel others to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas or actions. INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:
Work is occasionally performed according to existing procedures and instructions but often requires analysis of problems and development of solutions. This involves determining appropriate methods and task sequences. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Designs a treatment plan by means of computer and/or manual computation that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose and field placement technique in accordance with the radiation oncologist's prescription to a defined tumor volume in a timely fashion. Considers dose limiting structures in the design of treatment plans and documents dose in accordance with the radiation oncologist prescription. Assists in treatment simulations and tumor localization on dedicated devices, including CT, MRI, and PET when indicated, for radiation oncology treatment planning. Supervises, performs or assists in the planning of the fabrication of compensation filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam modifying devices, production of moulds, casts, and other immobilization devices as needed. Assists with the implementation of the treatment plan in the treatment area. Will assist the radiation therapists with the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and other treatment variables. Provides technical assistance including:
investigating problems, unsatisfactory set-ups, and developing appropriate solutions within area of expertise and authority. Makes recommendations to the Chief Physicist and Chief Radiation Therapist regarding solutions to unsatisfactory procedures. Provides physics and technical support to the medical physicist, in radiation protection, qualitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance of the radiation equipment. Has working knowledge of radiation safety and current rules and regulations of the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission). Keeps Chief Physicist informed of equipment failures, and documents activities in accordance with policy/directives. Assists with the application of specific methods of dosimetry including ion chamber, TLD, or film measurement as directed by the medical physicist. Assists in intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy procedures and in the subsequent manual and/or computer calculation of the dose distributions of these treatments. Assists in teaching applied aspects of medical dosimetry to students, residents, and dosimetry fellows. Works with the radiation oncologist, physicist, and therapist on implementing new treatment techniques. Participates in daily port conference and chart rounds. Attends monthly staff meetings, departmental in-services, and all required hospital professional and education in-services. Properly maintains billing procedures by accurately charging each patient according to services rendered. Participates in clinical research for the development and implementation of new techniques. Participates in continuing education in the area of current treatment planning techniques, and advances in medical dosimetry. Keeps requirements in order to maintain licensure. Keeps room/work area station neat and tidy and HIPAA compliant. Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
