VideosHelpDutiesAs a Safety & Occupational Health Specialist you will perform the following duties:
Conduct occupational surveys to identify and assess the risk factor of health and safety hazards within the region.
Evaluate findings and devise or implement measures to control or climate recognized hazards.
Review injury statistics by unit, occupation, location or causal factors and serve as key person in channeling resources to reduce risk.
Observe work practices to determine what procedures could be adopted to eliminate reduce risk problems; recommends increased or special training of employees.
Consult with workers and supervisors and recommends procedures to reduce/eliminate hazards; recommend use of protective clothing, special equipment and other methods.
Investigate major mishaps and perform chronological narratives of factors contributing to accidents based upon statement form witnesses, develops conclusions and makes recommendations for elimination or control of hazards identified.
Promote the objectives of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration program by contributing information to regional safety publications providing guidance and direction to Building Managers, supervisors and other administrative personnel.

The GS-12 salary range starts at $94,199 per year.
To qualify at the GS-12 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or higher in the Federal service.
Specialized experience is defined as experience coordinating and implementing environmental and safety programs in a government, industrial or commercial environment in the following areas:
occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, or a related field.

Knowledge of occupational safety principles, practices procedures, regulations, methods, techniques, and standards which enable the safety specialist to conduct surveys in buildings construction and maintenance, warehousing operations, central heating, refrigeration, printing plants, police guarding, and laboratory operations to recommend measures eliminating or controlling hazardous operational processes, dangerous human-machine relationships and unsafe working conditions.
Knowledge of occupational health hazards related to the exposure to various chemicals, asbestos, carbon monoxide, extreme heat, excessive noise levels, and other chemical, physical, and biological hazards.
Knowledge of psychological and physiological elements and practices sufficient to assess the interface of employees with machines and equipment, and to encourage the use of safety motivation activities.
Knowledge of a wide variety of hazardous and complex work operations and conditions to analyze mishap data, discover causal factors and to develop techniques to prevent or reduce the possibility of mishaps.
Knowledge and skill sufficient to manage a safety program with diverse but recognized hazards, achieving compliance with regulatory provisions and effectively communicating multiple safety practices and procedures to management, staff and line personnel.
