As the sole public charter school authorizer in our nation's capital, we provide oversight to 133 public charter schools which are managed by 68 independently run nonprofit organizations called local education agencies.
These schools educated 43,857 students in school year 2020-21, nearly half of DC's public school students.

Appoint this appointment:
There is established within the District of Columbia Government a Public Charter School Board (in this section referred to as the Board).
The Board shall consist of 7 members, appointed by the Mayor, with the advice and consent of the Council.
Mayor Bowser nominates members to the board; nominations are confirmed by the Council of the District of Columbia Members shall be selected so that knowledge of each of the following areas is represented on the Board:
Research about and experience in student learning, quality teaching, and evaluation of and accountability in successful schools; The operation of a financially sound enterprise, including leadership and management techniques, as well as the budgeting and accounting skills critical to the startup of a successful enterprise; The educational, social, and economic development needs of the District of Columbia; and The needs and interests of students and parents in the District of Columbia, as well as methods of involving parents and other members of the community in individual schools.
Terms of members.
- Members of the Board shall serve for terms of 4 years, Reappointment.
- Members of the Board shall be eligible to be reappointed for one 4-year term beyond their initial term of appointment.
Independence.
- No person employed by the District of Columbia public schools or a public charter school shall be eligible to be a member of the Board or to be employed by the Board.
Time commitment:
The Board meets monthly.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
