This position is located in the Health Information Management Section of the Business Office Service at the Washington D.C. VA Medical Center. The duties and responsibilities of this position are complex due to the multifaceted mission of the Washington D.C. Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The CDI Specialist is responsible for providing leadership for the implementation of the Medical Center's Clinical Documentation Improvement program. He/she possesses knowledge to efficiently and concurrently review medical records, identify opportunities for improved documentation and has knowledge of utilization management processes, clinical documentation requirements, core standards of care, coding and compliance guidelines and knowledge of DRGs and third party payment regulations. The incumbent is accountable for utilizing a variety of collaborative strategies with physicians, mid- level providers and other members of the interdisciplinary team, Medical care Cost Recovery and Health Information Management staff to ensure the severity of illness and level of service provided are accurately reflected in the medical record, maximizing third party collections and delivering quality patient care services. The incumbent provides leadership for and participates in performance improvement activities. He/she uses performance improvement methodologies and education strategies to develop formal training improvement programs for the medical/hospital staff concerning clinical documentation opportunities, coding and reimbursement issues and provides ongoing updates as regulations change. He/she must possess the ability to interact with a wide variety of employees and work independently in accomplishing assignments and program goals.

Must submit transcripts. Must submit RHIA Licensure. The major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Incumbent develops and conducts seminars, workshops, short courses, informational briefings, and conferences concerned with health record documentation, educational and functional training requirements to ensure program objectives are met for clinical and Health Information Management (HIM) staff.
Ensures active intra-departmental training program is in place for the HIM staff.
Facilitates improved overall quality, completeness and accuracy of health record documentation as well as promoting appropriate clinical documentation through extensive interaction with physicians, other patient caregivers and HIM coding staff__to ensure clinical documentation and services rendered to patients is complete and accurate.

Analyzes clinical information to identify areas within the chart for potential opportunities for improvement in physician documentation/qualified health care providers both concurrently & retrospectively
Works with clinical & ancillary departments to create, improve & monitor processes that enhance quality & productivity for the department & system wide
Formulates credible queries & analyze already constructed queries to improve clinical documentation of principle diagnosis, co- morbidities, procedures, present on admission & quality core measures while adhering to regulated guidelines
Analyze coding abstract to verify that documentation within the record is accurately reflected through ICD-9 codes while adhering to national coding guidelines
Must code, correct coding initiatives, procedures & requirements, ICD-9, HCPCS, Medicare/Medicaid rules and regulations, utilization review process;
Oversight of CDI audits, perform CDI program assessment, consultation and education.

Successfully completed training in an approved school for medical records technicians equates to 1 year of general experience. No credit may be given for partial completion of such training.
Successful completion of a bachelor's degree in a medical records administration educational program accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Medical Association's Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA).
Successful completion of the requirements for a bachelor's degree (in any field) and 1 year in a medical records administration educational program accredited by AHIMA and CAHEA.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
