Policy and Advocacy – US Programs Intern
Background:
The IRC Public Policy and Advocacy Office advocates for protecting and aiding refugees, the displaced, asylum-seekers, and other victims of conflict. It promotes issues of concern to the humanitarian and resettlement communities. The Public Policy and Advocacy team carries out, coordinates, and provides guidance on a wide variety of domestic and international advocacy initiatives, including expert briefings, public outreach and education, and communication with the media. The US-based advocates represent IRC with legislative and executive branches of the US government, the media, NGO partner agencies and coalitions, and the United Nations.
Scope:
The intern will assist the Senior Director and Associate Director for US Programs Policy and Advocacy with all aspects of their work. The thematic focus of this internship is linked with current strategic priorities of the US Programs advocate. These will include but will not be limited to issues related to state and federal backlash to refugee resettlement, the protection and treatment of unaccompanied Central American children in the United States, resettlement of Syrian refugees to the United States, and global resettlement advocacy.
Responsibilities:
Attend select meetings and congressional hearings on behalf of the team, take detailed notes, and report back.
Assist with legislative and policy analysis.
Assist with research on key advocacy issues.
Help draft and prepare materials for distribution during meetings and briefings.
Other duties and tasks as assigned.
Requirements:
This internship is for students pursuing an advanced degree in law (J.D. or LL.M), human rights and refugee studies, Public Policy, or Public Administration programs (Master's level). Preference will be given to students who have already completed relevant coursework (which could include courses on forced migration and/or international refugee law, U.S. immigration law, U.S. asylum policy and practice, etc.) within their program's curriculum.
Solid writing, editing, and research skills with focus on details.
Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced work environment.
Solid computer skills: must be able to work effectively and accurately with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, email, and internet applications.
Flexible work attitude: must be able to work productively in a team environment as well as under minimal supervision taking the initiative to ask questions as needed.
Available to work 2-3 full days per week for a minimum of 14 weeks during the winter/spring months.
Learning Outcomes:
Will gain experience writing with an advocacy focus.
Will learn about administrative and legislative advocacy processes and opportunities.
Will have an opportunity to observe and interact with different NGO partners and IRC staff involved in policy decisions.
Will network within the NGO community.
Will understand core elements of the US policy process and roles of various parties in crafting policy.
Will learn about process of coordinating advocacy across a large international NGO.
