UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director of Government Relations.
The Associate Director of Government Relations for UW Medicine (Associate Director) under the guidance of the Director of Government Relations, UW Medicine (Director), will assist the Director in the support of UW Medicine's mission to improve the health of the public by advocating on behalf of UW Medicine in the public policy and government arenas.
Duties will include promoting the mission to legislative, executive and regulatory officials including elected policy makers, professional policy staff and regulatory staff at the federal, regional, state and local levels of government.
The Associate Director engages with key stakeholders from numerous public and private organizations to advance the mission of UW Medicine.
The Associate Director will perform duties in support of the clinical academic and research mission of UW Medicine by coordinating activities with the director of legal and business matters, UW Medicine; the Chief of Staff, UW Medicine; the director of government financial relations and reimbursement, UW Medicine; and with individuals in the University's Office of External Relations including colleagues responsible for federal, state, regional and local government relations.
The Associate Director plays a key role in promoting the UW Medicine mission through developing strategic partnerships with government offices at the local, state, regional and federal level.
UW Medicine's programs include the delivery of advanced clinical diagnostics and treatment services, education of medical students, physician assistants and graduate and postgraduate trainees and maintenance of one of the largest and most advanced university-based basic and clinical medical research programs in the United States.
UW Medicine's programs also include the provision of medical care to underserved and disadvantaged persons, provision of comprehensive behavioral health services and maintaining the economic vitality of UW Medicine's owned and managed health system to ensure every patient receives the care that they deserve.
Responsibilities will include working with city, county, state, regional and federal elected officials, legislative and executive branch professional staff, regulatory staff and other interest groups on statutory and regulatory issues affecting its clinical, research and education/training programs.
The Associate Director will work in close coordination with the University's Office of External Relations in developing or responding to state, federal and regional legislation related to academic, clinical care and research issues.
The Associate Director will assist with projects to build legislative support for federal, state or local funding support for UW Medicine initiatives related to clinical, educational or research activities.
The Associate Director will work collaboratively with the Director to advance UW Medicine and the University's institutional goals.
This position demands the ability to work and communicate from remote locations, especially during State legislative session (January - April).
Daily communication with the Director and UW Medicine leaders on diverse issues of interest is necessary to relay information, collect feedback, and/or revise strategies with the campus community on critical aspects of the State strategy.
The position requires excellent organization, patience, flexibility, and the ability to balance several tasks across multiple timelines.
Responsibilities include:
Strategic Planning and Development Assist with the development and recommendation of strategies to educate and build support from government officials, interest groups and the public on policy issues relevant to UW Medicine and assist with the coordination of the implementing these plans.
Assist with research and analysis, preparation of summaries, presentations, issue letters and talking points on an array of policy topics with the goal of influencing legislative, executive and regulatory decisions that impact UW Medicine in the clinical, academic and research settings.
Travel to Washington, DC and Olympia on a regular basis to effect the above duties including meeting with elected officials, executive and legislative staff and attend association meetings to strategize on policy and budget matters.
External Relations and Communications Represent UW Medicine as directed at city, county, state and federal legislative and executive branch meetings and hearings.
Assist with advancing key initiatives that support UW Medicine's mission with internal and external audiences including state and federal professional associations such as the Washington State Medical Association, Washington State Hospital Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, American Hospital Association and America's Essential Hospitals and others.
Information Management and Analysis Track relevant legislation at the local, state and federal level.
Assist with the tracking, monitoring and follow the progress of key projects, strategic planning activities and specific action items that emanate from the senior leadership of UW Medicine.
Other Duties Work on special projects as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Sociology, Communications or related field.
Five plus years' experience in legislative and/or executive branch public policy work, community relations and/or governmental relations.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated experience in working effectively with state, local and community groups, preferably as a representative of a large public institution.
Knowledge of and strong commitment to health care and biomedical research activities is essential.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS Higher Education experience is beneficial.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
