About I AM ALSA' I AM ALS is building a groundbreaking movement committed to curing ALS and unlocking critical advances in the fights against Parkinsons, Alzheimers, Multiple Sclerosis, and other neurological diseases.
ALS can affect anyone regardless of race, age, or gender.
It is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
Today, once ALS starts, it is a terminal diagnosis that eventually takes away the ability to walk, speak, swallow, and ultimately, breathe.
Currently, someone is diagnosed with ALS every four minutes, and for those living in the United States, there is a 1 in 400 lifetime risk that they will be diagnosed with ALS.
A' The I AM ALS story begins with Brian Wallach, a healthy, 37-year-old former Yale Track & Field athlete and former White House staffer, who was diagnosed with ALS in November 2017.
With two girls under three, and no family history of ALS, Brian and his wife Sandra were in disbelief.
They read everything they could find about ALS and realized that patients, organizations, and advocates from the ALS community already had the tools in place to fight the disease.
But they needed to be mobilized and united to accelerate the movement for cures.
A' The I AM ALS ModelI AM ALS believes that only a holistic approach can finally lead to true breakthroughs in this fight.
Specifically, the organization is focused on four, distinct strategies:
collaboration, providing resources, advocacy, and raising awareness.
I AM ALS is collaborating with partners that include patients, organizations, researchers, and drug companies.
They are providing critical information and resources to patients, caregivers, and the research and healthcare communities.
To advocate for cures, they are building upon effective community organizing and fundraising strategies established during former President Obamas campaign and in the White House.
And they are raising awareness through an innovative public relations campaign that elevates the voices of the ALS community.
By continuing to pursue these strategies, I AM ALS will push the boundaries of what a nonprofit in this space can do.
I AM ALS is also committed to open sourcing its breakthroughs, thereby reshaping the way we fight all disease.
A' At its core, I AM ALS believes that advocating for critical research and funding requires building individuals agency and ownership.
Its vision is of an empowered community of patients, caregivers, and activists dedicated to driving a search for a cure that is more rapid and effective than we ever thought possible.
