The Senior Advisor represents the Bureau in matters of conflict prevention, mitigation, and threat assessment.
Working in a continual dialogue with the Intelligence Community , senior policy staff within the Department of State and the interagency community, they will advise the Assistant Secretary on core regional security concerns.
ResponsibilitiesServes as a senior expert and primary advisor to the Bureau Assistant Secretary on all aspects of regional peace and security affairs including conventional military issues, nuclear weapons systems, terrorism and proxy use.
As a recognized authority on conflict prevention, mitigation, and threat assessment, serves as a regional conflict policy advisor to the SCA's senior officials especially the Assistant Secretary.
Conducts technical analysis and assessments of complex security issues that intersect with SCA foreign policy objectives.
Conceives new theories in the analysis of conflict prevention, mitigation, and threat assessment.
Probes analyses of action and decision documentation submitted to Bureau policymakers for approval, ensuring that their advocates/originators evaluate and incorporate the impact of recommendations on broader Bureau and Department priorities.
Analyzes, plans, conducts, and evaluates long-term (over the horizon, ie unforeseeable) opportunities for SCA bilateral and multilateral regional engagement and relationships as well as for the solution of regional peace and security concerns.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Have a bachelor's or graduate degree from an accredited college or university in international law, international relations, political science, economics, history, sociology, geography, social or cultural anthropology, law, statistics, or in the humanities; ORHave a bachelor's or graduate degree from an accredited college or university that included a combination of courses, with at least 24 semester hours in international law and international relations, political science, economics, history, sociology, geography, social or cultural anthropology, law, statistics, or in the humanities; ORHave 12 semester hours in one of the above disciplines and 12 semester hours in statistics / quantitative methods.
ORHave a combination of education and experience where your coursework was equivalent to a major, or a combination of related courses totaling at least 24 semester hours, (as shown above), PLUS appropriate relevant experience OR additional education.
ORHave completed at least 4 years of appropriate experience in one OR more of the fields listed above in work associated with international organizations, problems, or other aspects of foreign affairs.

Experience making long and short term policy recommendations regarding conflict prevention, mitigation, and threat assessment.
Experience advising senior leaders on South and Central Asian peace and security foreign policy.
