This position is located in a National Park Service unit of National Capital Parks-East (NACE) in Washington, DC. NACE consists of 16 units and additional associated partner and concession sites spread across the urban and suburban areas of the District of Columbia and Maryland. NACE contains a wide range of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources. Park visitors are ethnically and culturally diverse, coming from all parts of the world, and speaking many different languages. The various sites have strong connections with local communities as well as attract national and international visitation. Due to the proximity to the Capital, park sites often have high political interest and are visited by U.S., state, local, international, departmental, and agency dignitaries and staff.

The primary purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment and several other types of motor driven machinery and is responsible for servicing and maintenance or recommending maintenance of all assigned maintenance equipment. You must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
PHYSICAL EFFORT
Heavy Physical effort is required working eight hour periods, climbing in and out of different machines, pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation, and may lift such items as opening and closing tail gate on five yard dump trucks. Requires constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works outside and inside with the majority of the work outside. When working outside, the worker is frequently exposed to inclement weather such as rain, mud, snow, hot and humid, and/or extremely cold weather. Ice, road oils, and other items such as loose gravel and rocks create hazardous conditions. The operator is exposed to potential injury and subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from motors and exhausts. When working inside must ensure proper ventilation to minimize fumes while and/or other fumes caused by equipment or vehicles.

Suitable for Federal employment as determined by a background investigation Incumbent must wear a National Park Service Uniform Possess and maintain a valid State or District of Columbia driver's license
Incumbent operates as a grader operator, dozer operator, motor vehicle operator, and/or loader operator for the park. In this capacity, the duties include excavating, grading road surfaces, pulling ditches, cutting slopes and drainage ditches, and road shoulder maintenance. The incumbent is involved with building roads, trails, erosion repairs, constructing fire breaks, excavating and landscaping. The incumbent must grade surfaces, compact soils, or roll to exact specifications on flat or rolling terrain. Assigned tasks are performed in moderate terrain, steep to moderate slopes, elevated and sharp curves and switch backs, etc. Operates end loaders to load from stock pile or pit, soil, rock, gravel, trash, etc. Drives and operates the five yard dump truck for the purpose of moving dirt, materials etc. Operates vehicles up to 80,000 GVW; Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles, minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments. Replaces chains, belts, cables, etc.

REQUIREMENTS:
Appointment will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation. Under the requirements of the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), all new Federal Employees must pass a background investigation. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
New employees of the Department of the Interior must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of entrance on duty.
NPS uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.
